My Inquiry piskel

Our Inquiry focus this term is the power of taking action and a choice of art. We have to choose a style of art. Our choices were Pointillism, Papier-mâché, Doodle Art and Collage. I chose to do Pointillism, which is a type of art that you make with dots. The bad thing in the world that I am doing my art on is Deforestation. My Super Speech

In Writing, we have been working on our speeches. We got to choose our topic and I chose strange laws because I think that it is an original speech idea. I had to research my speech a lot because I didn't know many weird rules from around the world. From the laws in this speech Germany has the most with 2 that I included. Wonderful Writing Starters

In Writing, we have been doing starters in every session based on a photo. The first starter was a ship on its side and the second one was a shark coming out of the water with people walking past. Dreadful Deforestation

In Inquiry this term we are doing the power of taking action. We had to do a SOL on what problem in the world we are going to do for Inquiry. I am doing Deforestation for Inquiry and I did my SOL on that as well. We had to do two open-ended questions in our slide. What problem would you take action for?

Term 4 Goals

At the start of term 4, we made a post of what goals we want to achieve this term. The one on the left is what we want to achieve in work and the one on the right is about the 5 R's. The 5 R's are Respect, Reciprocity, Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness, and Resilience. The one I chose to do my goal on is Reflectiveness. Do you have any goals this term?

Perfect Persuasive Writing 4

In Writing, we have been doing persuasive writing this term and we were given a task if we wanted New Zealand children to be able to vote and I said no. You will find out soon if you read my persuasive writing.

NZ children shouldn’t be able to vote

Hi, I’m Dylan, do you think children should be able to vote in elections? Because I don’t and I am going to tell you why.

Firstly, most kids would just vote for the current Prime Minister or if they are really young they could just vote for the party with their favourite colour or point out a random politician they like the look of.

Secondly, a lot more parties would be made so they could be in parliament with hooks like giving out sweets to every child in New Zealand. This could be a waste of our taxpayer’s money and time.  We already have enough political parties to choose between.

Thirdly, more paper would be used because some people don’t have devices and a lot of trees will have to be used to send voting papers out to most people in New Zealand.

Next, kids don’t know much about politics, so they could just vote for the same people as their parents. Or if there is someone they know in the elections they could vote for them. This is not a well-educated decision.

Now, some kids could just scribble a person’s name out and write their own in that space. Or if they get the paper version then they could just tick them all.

If kids could vote there should be an age limit of at least 10 or 11. At that age, you should be expected to be sensible.

After this do you think children should be able to vote? Because I don’t.

Why we should get more than one hour of screen time a day

In writing, we have been doing persuasive writing. this is a build-up for when we do our speeches. This is my second persuasive writing and we could choose out of some options that you can be for or against. I chose to be against the one that I chose. I think that I have done well on this topic because it is quite a hard topic. If I have done anything wrong or you think that I can do anything better please comment.

Screen time for children shouldn’t be limited to one hour a day.

Hello, I’m Dylan and I am going to talk to you why we should get more than one hour of screen time a day. I think that we should get more than one hour and I have got reasons to back myself up.

Firstly, I think that we should get about two hours of learning on devices and one hour for playing games on a device. A Canadian study shows that a child between eight and 11 should have 60 minutes of physical activity, two hours of screen time and nine to 11 hours of sleep. I think that this is quite close to what I think is right. 

Secondly, It can give kids time to relax if they have had a hard day and if they are really tired, they can have some time to chill out. And if they are really sad they can have some time out on their favourite game. There are also educational websites like Epic reading and Mathletics and you can write stories on google docs. You can also do research on Google and Safari. 

Thirdly, You can learn a lot of things and you can ‘meet’ other people on their blogs and become pen pals and they might be able to visit you from other countries. You could also do video chats and speak to each other after school if you are in a time zone where you are awake at the same time. 

After this, do you think that children should get more than 1 hour of screen time a day? Because if you do, then, in my opinion, you are right.

Thankfulness collage with Canva

In Cybersmart on Wednesday 28th of August, we made a thankfulness collage on Canva. We made this because our focus this term is Thankfulness. We had to search up what we were most thankful for. I put Soccer in because it is my favourite sport and I put in burgers because it is one of my favourite meals. I put a house in because I live in a house and I put water in because we couldn't survive without it. If you think I could improve this please comment. What would you put on your poster?

Origin of food 2

In Homebase haoura, we have been doing the origin of food. Because I finished the first one I got to do a second. My first one was on pizza and it was really easy but this one on ice cream was quite hard. I found out a lot about ice cream in this one. Can you please comment to say how good I have done and if I could do anything better.

In Reading, we have been doing a book club on Mondays and we do activities. This give me five biteable is a can-do and I have been doing this for a couple of weeks. Winter Tournament Reflection

On Wednesday the 7th of August the year 5/6 Marshland Soccer A team went to the winter tournament at Rawhiti Domain. In our grade, we had 8 teams on a futsal size pitch. We won 2 games, drew 2 games and lost 3. I think that our team did really well in the tournament and we got a 0-0 draw against the team that came second. I felt that I did well, scoring 2 goals in the tournament. I learned that to play on pitches that size you have to be prepared for anything because the pitches were smaller than the ones that we play on Fridays. I think that I need to work around the middle of the pitch. If I could go back and change something then I would make more of an effort to help get back and defend because when I was midfield I would just hover around the edge of the box. Of the 5 R's, the one that I think I used was Resilience because when we lost it was hard to take the loss.

Terrific term 3 reading assignments

For reading, we do 2 reading assignments a week. The first week I did 2 give me fives and I will keep adding to this slide. This week I have done things about other readers. We have a list of about 20 activities to do and I will do different ones next week. I think that I have done well in these activities because I did them in 2 days. Do you like Harry Potter?

Perfect Persuasive writing

This is my persuasive writing from the start of term 3. I chose this subject because of our inquiry this term which is on the power of innovation. This persuasive writing is going to help us because we are doing speeches later in the term. I think I have done really well for writing a lot of words about this subject.

Why we should fill up the Red Zones

Hello, I'm Dylan and I am going to tell you why we need to fill up the red zones. In this persuasive writing piece, I am going to tell you what we should build in the multiple red zones. Some of my ideas are a mountain bike trail, a running trail, a dog park, a bike pump track and more.

 For my first point, we need to build some things but they need to be careful how tall they are and the weight. But a reason we need to get creative to fill up spaces is that we have too many places that are empty. And if we build some things it might bring people from around the world and some of those people might make friendships.

 Onto my second point, which is why we need more attractions. If we get more attractions to come into the red zone it will get more money for the council so even more things can be built and so they can afford to make even more things. And because a lot of people moved away after the earthquakes it might bring people back to Christchurch. And if there are moving events held in the red zone parking outside of the red zone will be full people will have to walk miles.

That comes to my next point, why we need to make the roads again. If we do then it will be easier to get around to things on the other side instead of taking the long way around the outside. We could just open the roads for short times only or just make a barrier so you have to pay to get in and it will bring more money to hold multiple events.

 As for the old buildings people could do street art in a really bright picture to bring joy and happiness because of the bright colours. They could also add special effects like the 3D wall in town. If people see that it could make them really happy. They could also hold a reunion for the people who used to live in the red zones. They could also add in some small sporting grounds for rugby and soccer and other things. If they did all of this then I would be very glad.

But what we need to do to attract worldwide sporting events is a world-class sporting centre. And that would bring lots of people from around the world to come and eat in our restaurants and sleep in our hotels. All of those people would be spending what we need. Money.

Most of these things would all have to be made without heavy machinery because we can’t risk more liquefaction rising up. Do you reckon all this will work if we had the choice to do this? Do you reckon this is possible? Because I do. Would you agree with me?

Geometrocity

In maths, we have started to make a geometrocity. This is where you make your own city using your geometry skills. We have only just started to make these and we are not on the building stage yet. I think that I am making good progress. Do you like maths?

The Origin of Food

In Homebase Haoura, we did the origin of food. We did it on our favourite food. I chose Pizza. The pizza was not very hard to find information on. Doing this didn't take very long. I think I did well in this task. What is your favourite food?

Give Me Five

In Literacy, we do a book club on Monday's of every school week we can. We all picked a book from the library and I chose Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In "give me five" we had to choose some characters from our book and I chose Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. "Give me five" is where you choose quotes that describe the characters that you have chosen. What are the characters you would choose from your favourite book?

Inquiry Power of Nature

For our Inquiry this term we had to do a Google slide or a Google site on something connected to the power of plants, the power of natural disasters, the power of weather or the power of animals. I chose the power of animals and the animal that I chose was a Liger. Ligers are one of the rarest animals in the world and I chose the Liger because not many people know what they are. We had a few weeks to do it and it was really hard. Do you know what a Liger is?

Doctor Seuss Reading Aloud

At the start of the term in Literacy, we had to do a screencastify reading a Doctor Suess book. I chose to do 'The Cat in the Hat'. We had to read a part of the book to ourselves with as much expression as we could. My recordings aren't that long because I only read a small part of the book. I think my second one was better because I had practice with Pukeko kids in buddy reading. Which one do you think is better?

Week 9 ako

For our week nine ako work we had to go and do an SIT (surprising interesting troubling) on Kiwi Kids News and Wonderopolis and we had to choose something from our spelling activities list on spellodrome. we had the choice of posting each of the things separately or all in one go. The Best Biteable Ever On Matariki

This Biteable connects to the post before this one about the slide that I made on Matariki as well. I have finished the biteable now. I have added in one extra question and it is my longest biteable I have ever done. I chose to do a biteable because it is something different. In SOL (student organized learning) we had to do a Sol on Matariki because it is Matariki time. We could present it in any way we wanted. I chose to do a slide because it seemed to be the easiest choice and I had done it for all of my previous Sols. We had to answer 3 questions and the first one was what is Matariki and we had to choose the other 2 yourself. I have decided on one question but I haven't chosen the other one. Information report 2

In writing, we had to make another information report and this time we had to do it on an endangered animal. I chose the Green Sea Turtle and I had to follow my writing rubric. I know that I followed my rubric because I got 3's in punctuation, spelling, publishing, and closing. I also know that I write it in my own words because it doesn't have any sections the same as a website. My rubric is below. Please leave a comment.

This is my slide on Adding Decimals. For maths, we had to make a choice if we wanted to make a slide on adding decimals, ordering decimals and converting decimals. Week 6 ako

For our week 6 ako in literacy, we had to make a crossword puzzle after we had completed one on Lovatt's crosswords. We had to choose 10 words from our book club book and I chose some of the hardest words. I tried to make this as hard as possible. Please say if you could try to complete this or if I could do any better.

My Information Report

For writing, we had to create a report about something in nature that is powerful. I chose crocodiles because I think they are powerful because they can stay underwater for ages. There are 3 types of crocodiles that I did this report on. Can you answer this question in the comments - How heavy can American crocodiles get? Please leave a comment and say what I can improve.

My Mind Map

This week's ako work was making a mind map of our book club book. We had to look at some examples of mind maps and then I went on Canva to make my mind map. Our success criteria were that our mind map covers the things in the story. I tried my best to include everything in the story.
It is eye-catching because it has different colours.

Informational Report writing rubric

We had to make a rubric for our information report we are going to do later in the term. Our rubric was done in pairs and I chose my friend Ollie. We had to make this in 1 week so we had to work fast. The groups wrote up 1 thing that they thought that people needed in an information report. Me and Ollie wrote up publishing. Week 1 reading ako

For our ako in week 1, we had to make a book cover and a blurb. We also had to write a piece about the author. This task was based on our book club book. My book club book was The happy prince and other stories. I chose the cover because a bird is in some of the stories. I made this cover on
Canva. My success criteria helped me make my cover pages better. I think my cover is eye-catching because it has some bright colours. My information came from 2 sites. The sites were Google and shmoop. My cover suits my novel because a bird is in some stories.

Influential New Zealander Report

We were set the task of making a slide with a lot of information on one influential New Zealander. Our teacher Mr. Bell gave us some headings that we could use if we wanted to. I chose Jonah Lomu because he was a really big figure in international rugby when he was playing. My report is above.

Self Portrait

Korimako had to make a self portrait in the style of an artist who blends colours. We had to use pastels to blend in all of the colours. We were given a photo of our self and we had to start from scratch. For some people it took a while to do while some people just went through quite fast.

My SOL

In SOL we have been set questions and we have to research on the internet to answer them. You  can see what they are about because they have titles on them and none are the same. I have done some of these with Liam because he is fun to work with. Some of these are not finished because we only have one session to complete theme. I hope you learn something.

My Welcoming Pack to a Cricket Team

We had to make a welcoming pack for  someone who is coming to a team that you can welcome them to. I chose a cricket team because it seemed like the easiest option.

Maori Animation

Our task was to make a presentation with Maori greetings and put it on our blog. We had to use multiple greetings to create something that we could share with other people. We were set this task because Maori is one of our national languages. It also helped us improve our Maori vocabulary.
